2026 Wastewater Surveillance Symposium
The 2026 Wastewater Surveillance Symposium, hosted by Syracuse University and the New York State Department of Health, brings together partners and jurisdictions of the New York NWSS Center of Excellence to foster collaboration and advancements in wastewater surveillance. Together, we’ll examine challenges and successes in wastewater surveillance and strengthen knowledge sharing.
This year’s Symposium is an invitation-only, in-person event.

2025 Wastewater Surveillance Summit
The 2025 Wastewater Surveillance Summit, hosted by Syracuse University and the New York State Department of Health, brings together public health professionals, utility operators, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders to explore the next chapter of this growing field. Together, we’ll examine novel advances, share real-world applications, and foster cross-sector collaboration to strengthen public health through wastewater data.
This year’s conference will be offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available.

This in-person event brings together partners across New York State’s CoE region to foster collaboration and innovation in wastewater surveillance.

2024 Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour
NYS Wastewater Surveillance Network staff toured a wastewater treatment plant in Atlantic Beach, NY to express our appreciation for their contributions to the program.
2024 Wastewater Samplers Giveaway
The NYS Wastewater Surveillance Network launched a giveaway of automatic wastewater samplers to participating wastewater treatment plants, providing operators with the equipment needed to collect samples efficiently and reliable. 18 sites received an automatic wastewater sampler of their choice.

Join the Water Environment Federation, in collaboration with Syracuse University, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Environmental Protection Agency, at a one-day workshop in Syracuse, NY.
2023 Introduction to Wastewater Surveillance for Local Health Departments (Virtual Course)
The Introduction to Wastewater Surveillance for Local Health Departments course is designed for local health department directors and public health commissioners. The course provides an overview of wastewater surveillance, details of the program, the science behind the system, and how the program works. The course is a requirement for the year 11 local health department performance incentive program.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Identify key aspects of wastewater surveillance science and its applications
Describe the New York State Wastewater Surveillance Network
Describe ways LHDs can use wastewater surveillance data for public health action
